FEI World Dressage Challenge 2012

The FEI World Dressage Challenge was held last week in Taupo at the National Equestrian Centre.

A busy time for us all especially coming  out of Leonie Bramalls Clinic and heading straight down to Taupo with the team. It was great timing and the horses were feeling very fit and healthy and ready for a good show.

Doringcourt and Northern Fortuous were entered in the FEI Prix St George section along with 6 other strong combinations.

Day one was the warm up test with Northern Fortuous and I riding a very careful test with a few mistakes to end up 5th overall on 64.86 %.  I was very happy with Doringcourts test, just having a few teething problems in the tempi changes but finishing with a strong score of 70.32%  to win the test. Britta Pederson and Upendo were second on 69.07%, Christine Weal was third on 65.98 and Mandy Littlejohn a close fourth on 65.86%.

Friday night was the welcome Cocktail Party, draw and announcement of the NZL Team.

The team consisted of myself on Doringcourt, Britta Pederson, Christine Weal and Simone Kann.

It is always such an honour to wear the silver fern and a very proud moment for Doringcourt and I.

Day 2 saw us wake up to a stunning day in Taupo! The Prix St George class didn’t start until 2.45 so this gave me lots of time to relax and prepare the horses for our big day. Our NZ team member Simone Kann was riding early on her stunning mare Balmoral Oakley. The NZ team got together and went and watched her complete a beautiful test to win the class with a great percentage of  67.   . Great start for the NZ Team. We then sat in the sun for awhile and enjoyed watching many other lovely combinations in the Elementary and Medium classes.

My first ride of the day was onboard Northern Fortuous. I was so happy with our test, improving by a country mile from the day before. He went into the lead on 65.13  . A quick change over and I was back onboard Doringcourt. I was really happy with Doringcourt’s test. We had some hairy moments with a few spooks here and there but the quality of his work was good enough to win the class on 66.38  %

I was so proud of my horses ending up winning the class on Doringcourt and taking second place on Northern Fortuous. Shiwon Green was third on Da Vinci with 64.27% and Britta Pederson riding Upendo fourth on 64.211.

Congratualtions to all the other class winners! For full results visit www.nzequestrian.org.nz

I would like to thank my Mum and wonderful helper Letitia Neil for all their hard work and support, also Kylie Baker for her wonderful support, Dressage NZ for organizing such a well run event, the FEI, the Lion Foundation and all the other sponsers and supporters that made this event possible.

I would also like to thank my wonderful sponsors for their amazing products and support. Prestige NZ, Hyperflex HA, Hi Shine NZ, Gidgee Eyewear Australia, Thomas Cook and Shires horse rugs. I feel very privileged to have you onboard!

Looking forward to a few days off and then back into it for the next competition!

Leonie Bramall Clinic

Leonie Bramall touched back down in New Zealand last week for a busy 5 day clinic at North Park Equestrian Centre.

What a fantastic week everybody had! Leonie once again shared with us her amazing knowledge, injecting all the riders with lots of inspiration, new ideas and plenty of homework for the riders and horses to all to go on with.

A big thank you to Leonie Bramall for coming across to the otherside of the world to help us and for giving the horses and riders so much of her energy, Sally Bank for organising the  clinics and keeping the riders all happy with their times, and Volker Dusche for letting us steal Leonie for 5 days. Our fingers are crossed that she will come back to North Park at the beginning of next year. Keep an eye out on the website for new clinic dates or email sally@northparkequestrian.co.nz if you would like to be put on the waiting list for her next clinic.

Below are some images of Leonie’s stay at North Park Equestrian. Enjoy!

Introducing Leonie Bramall – Clinic 3rd-6th November

Leonie needs no introduction. She is an extraordinary coach. She not only has the ability to pin down every combinations major weakness but also an exceptional talent for helping you to change and develop your weakness into strengths.

There are a couple of lesson spots still available.  If you would like a lesson, please contact Andrea or Sally by email or phone 0274735250.

Introducing Leonie Bramall

As developmental trainer for horse and rider the Canadian born Leonie Bramall now calls Gestüt Mühlenort home. From child hood onwards horses were the only thing in Leonie’s head, and thus her riding career began at a very young age. As well as the characteristic western style of riding. Leonie was also very much at home in the 3 day eventing scene, before her remarkable career became more and more concentrated in the dressage arena.

As a Junior and Young Rider Leonie was one of the most striking talents in Canadian dressage sport. More than 30 wins at the advanced levels and many times the title of advanced champion belong to her achieved honors in North America. Further Leonie belonged to the 1981 Gold medal and 1982 Silver medal teams at the North American Continental Young Rider Championships.

At the tender age of 18 Leonie decided to set her sails for the stable of, at that time, Canadian National trainer Johann Hinnemann in Germany.

In Hinnemann’s dressage stable in Voerde Leonie became one of the major figures of the farm sharing the responsibilities for the training of horses and riders over a 15 year period. Many nationally and internationally known dressage horses and riders have profited from her assistance with their training in learning the ABC’s of the ground basics and the fine tuning helping them on their way to higher success.

Horses such as WHITE STAR (v. Werther) or also BELTAIN (v. Bolero) whom, thanks to Leonie , became multiple winners at the advanced levels. Due to these victories BELTAIN recieved his stallion approval over his sport success and also won the Rheinland Dressage Championship that year.

Further wins in the advanced levels for WUNSCHTRAUM (v. Wenzel I) who is now successful in the USA. RIBOT (v. Ribot), CARINA (v. Canaris) etc. CALYPSO (v. Casiar) whom Leonie successfully competed through to Grand Prix .

With FOSBURY (v. Foxtrott – Renaldo) Leonie won the German Championships for the 5 year old dressage horses in 1992 in Verden. In the Netherlands Leonie rode the highly regarded INSPEKTEUR in his young years at the beginning of a most successful competition career. At the stallion championship in S’hertogenbosch 1995 this pair ranked second in the 5 year old class having impressively and outstandingly the year before won the Championship title for 4 year olds.

Through Johann Hinnemann, Leonie became responsible over a 2 year period for the further training of the stallions of one of the most important breeding operations in Germany, Stud Vorwerk in Cappeln. Both RELEVANT (v. Rubinstein – Goldlöwe), and also ROHDIAMANT (v. Rubinstein – Inschallah) definitely profited from Leonie’s input to their training on their way to a fantastic career in breeding and sport. As a 7 year old in 1996 ROHDIAMANT and Leonie won 2 qualifications and thus a place in the Frankfurt final of the »Nürnberger Burg Pokal«.

A 3 year creative break from higher dressage was followed in 2001 by instantaneous success. In the summer of this year Leonie took over the training of the 6 year old Hessen stallion BOTICELLO (v. Brindisi – Blue Grenadier xx). Along with the immediate success and wins in Medium dressage tests the outstanding combination went on in a short time to win the Hessen Championship along with the qualification for the German Championships and the World Championships for 6 year old Dressage horses in Verden. An outstanding 6th and 5th place in the initial qualification and an impressive top 10 finish in the final were the outstanding result.

In the Fall of 2001 Leonie concentrated her efforts on the training of the breeding stallion FIORISSIMO (v. Werther) as the new trainer of Gestüt Bonhomme , Bramsche. Within a couple of months the imposing bay Hanoverian was a serial winner at the Medium level with Leonie. This pair continued their winning ways in 2002 with the first victories and high placings at the advanced levels.

Leonie and Gilbona

Along with the above mentioned and more than outstanding competition success, Leonie triumphed her greatest achievements to date both Nationally and Internationally over years with the Oldenburg chestnut mare GILBONA (v. Grundstein) Countless wins and placings in Grand Prix, Grand Prix Special and Kür both nationally and internationally established this pair as a solid member of the Canadian National Team. The highlights over these years were definitely the Olympic Games Barcelona 1992 and Atlanta 1996 as well as the World Equestrian Games in Den Haag 1994. GILBONA and Leonie were able to hold their own taking an outstanding 3 place ranking at the Hamburg Derby 1994. Sadly a severe illness and the death of this charismatic and breathtakingly moving mare ended the impressive career of this nationally an internationally regarded »Dream Team«.

Taking Leonie’s amazing career as a whole, she has to date over 2500 wins (stand: 31.12.2001) and placings at the advanced to Grand Prix levels.

Leonie and the success of her students

In 1993 after only a few competitive years in Germany Leonie was awarded the »Golden Riding Award«. Thanks to Leonie’s help many other riders in Germany have also received this high profile award.

Also in the 3 day event scene and the Junior/Pony Dressage sport scene Leonie’s students have booked in first class success both Nationally and Internationally. The 21 year old Insa-Kristina Weddige has established herself within a few years as one of Germany’s finest up and coming in the 3 day eventing scene. With her horse ARAM (v. Akitos xx) Insa has had top international success (2nd place in England and European Championships Team Gold) not to mention her success as German Champion 1999 and reserve German Champion 2001. Also the 18 year old Eva-Christin Putz with her mare DESTINY (v. Derby Favorite) has been successful participant at the Junior German 3 day Champion-ships. At the Trakehner National Championships 2002 Qualification for German Championships Eva and ALTEFELD´S ROB OY (v. Sixtus) had the leading edge. An important role in this win was the outstanding dressage score of 9.5!

In the pony scene Leonie’s students are highly respected participants. With the Rheinland pony stallion DOMINO DANCING Alice Fengels rode to an outstanding bronze medal finish both in the 5 and in the following year 6 year old class for dressage ponies at the German Young Horse Championships. This pair were also 2 years on the German short list ponies and collected countless honors both nationally and internationally. DOMINO DANCING´S next partner was another long time student of Leonie, Wendy Wehmeyer. This combination went on to play a leading role at the Rheinland Championships as well as German Championships and further internationally have laid an impressive mark. Wendy and DOMINO were also named to the German short list ponies 2002.

Leonie since 2002 has had endless success in Germany with competing, being a world class Trainer and breeding some spectacular horses with her partner Volker.  Leonie’s list just goes on with endless wins and placings from young horses through to Grand Prix. Her exceptional talent as a Trainer does not go unnoticed and she has taken many of her students through to International success including the Olympics!  Leonie has been quoted as a genius!

Leonie regularly travels to NZ and Australia training some of  Australia and New Zealand’s top dressage riders.  Leonie shows great interest and pride in her students – we are so lucky in NZ and Australia to have a trainer of this caliber visiting our shores.

NZ Clinics.

This Winter I have been very lucky and kept myself nice and busy traveling around the country teaching. Teaching is a great passion of mine and passing on information that I have learnt and helping riders with their horses is very rewarding. It is also so refreshing meeting all different kinds of people and seeing new places in your own country!

I would like to say a big thank you to Siobahn and Alex Fauth for organizing the clinics in Christchurch and looking after me so well. Also Nicki Klevering for organizing all the Waikato clinic. I thoroughly enjoy helping everyone and watching their progress in and outside of the competition arena!

If anyone would like to know dates of my next clinic in Christchurch or the Waikato please email andrea@northparkequestrian.co.nz

Below are a few images from my Christchurch Clinic. Enjoy!!
